Media Literacy and Civic Storytelling Labs

Turn your story into civic voice

The REFLECT Media Literacy & Civic Storytelling Labs support young people in critically engaging with online media and creating powerful digital stories rooted in their identities, realities and aspirations.

Through interactive labs, peer exchange and creative mentoring, participants explore misinformation, digital ethics, visual storytelling and social impact communication.

The creative pathway

From critical media skills to public storytelling

1
Read media critically

Participants explore how online media shapes perceptions, how misinformation spreads and how bias influences public narratives.

2
Create with purpose

Through a civic storytelling toolkit, youth learn to shape personal and community experiences into ethical, compelling digital narratives.

3
Share with audiences

Digital exhibitions and community screenings amplify youth voices and create spaces for dialogue around migration, belonging and social change.

Curriculum and toolkit

Learning to read media and create stories

The Media Literacy Curriculum and Civic Storytelling Toolkit help participants move from critical understanding to creative expression. They combine media literacy topics with practical production guides for trainers, mentors and young creators.

Misinformation and bias detection

Participants learn how to recognise misleading content, question sources and understand how online narratives can influence communities.

Digital ethics

Participants explore responsible communication, consent, representation and the ethical choices involved in telling personal or community stories.

Visual storytelling

Participants learn how images, framing, sequence and emotion can shape a story and communicate civic messages effectively.

Social impact communication

Participants explore how stories can raise awareness, promote inclusion and contribute to dialogue around civic identity and social change.

Practical media production

The toolkit offers accessible guides on scripting, podcasting, mobile video production, photovoice and digital publishing.

Civic Storytelling Labs

Creative spaces for youth voices

Selected participants take part in interactive Civic Storytelling Labs delivered over six months in a hybrid format, combining live online workshops with self-paced tasks hosted on the REFLECT Moodle platform.

Facilitators guide participants through creative modules on visual storytelling, podcasting, photovoice and ethical digital publishing.

1
International teams

Participants work in cross-country teams, exchanging perspectives and building shared learning across different contexts.

2
Story development

Youth submit initial story concepts, helping facilitators prepare mentoring sessions aligned with their interests and ideas.

3
Peer review

Cross-country peer review sessions create space for feedback, intercultural exchange and creative improvement.

4
Digital production

Each team conceptualises and produces a media piece such as a short documentary, podcast, community blog or photo essay.

Who takes part

A selected group of young storytellers

The activity will involve 15 youth participants from each partner country.

Priority will be given to young people who have completed previous REFLECT activities such as virtual dialogue or training activities and who demonstrate creativity or interest in storytelling.

The selection process will be based on an open call shared through REFLECT communication channels. Applicants will be invited to complete a short application, with attention to inclusivity, diversity and digital access readiness.

A virtual gallery will also be launched on the REFLECT website, allowing wider European and African audiences to access and interact with the digital stories.

Youth creators will have the opportunity to present their work and reflect on their learning journey during live Q&A sessions.
